San Francisco 49ers Projected To Make Offensive Roster Cut
Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers’ draft history in recent years has been marred by disappointments, with few exceptions. Despite hitting the jackpot with quarterback Brock Purdy in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft, the team’s overall draft performance has been underwhelming, particularly on Day 2.

The selection of Trey Lance with the third overall pick in 2021 was a costly mistake, given the significant trade capital invested in him. The 49ers traded away their own first-round pick, plus first-rounders in 2022 and 2023, and a third-rounder in 2022 to move up and select Lance.

While the intention was to find a franchise quarterback, Lance’s tenure has been marked by injuries and underwhelming performances.

However, the issues extend beyond that singular move. Third-round picks like Ambry Thomas (2021) and Tyrion Price-Davis (2022) have failed to make a lasting impact, with the latter already off the team. Second-rounder Drake Jackson (2022) is also fighting for a roster spot, and his future with the team is uncertain. The 2023 draft has not yielded promising resultseither, with kicker Jake Moody being an uncertain choice from the start.

Wide receiver Danny Gray, a promising pick, is now likely to be cut due to his inability to stay healthy and contribute meaningfully.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Gray’s chances of making the team are slim, and even a spot on the practice squad is not guaranteed. Veterans Chris Conley and Trent Taylor are the favorites for those spots, leaving Gray’s future with the team in doubt.

The 49ers’ struggles on Day 2 of the draft are a concern, as that is where many teams build the core of their roster depth. The NFL’s middle rounds are crucial for finding players who can contribute immediately and develop into starters. The 49ers’ inability to find impact players in those rounds has hindered their ability to build a deep and talented roster.

While the team still has a chance to return to the Super Bowl next year, their draft performance must improve to sustain long-term success. The NFL is a competitive league, and teams that consistently miss on draft picks will struggle to keep up with their opponents.

The 49ers’ front office must reassess their scouting process and find ways to identify and develop talent more effectively.

The 49ers’ recent struggles are a troubling trend in the NFL Draft. They must turn their fortunes around to build a roster that can compete with the best teams around the league.

It will be interesting to see if Danny Gray is able to perform well during training camp and the preseason to save his job. Should he be unable to do so, he’ll go down as just another disappointing draft pick for the San Francisco 49ers.
