Patriots' Top Defensive Free Agent: No Contract Offer?
Bob DeChiara, USA TODAY SPORTS

Sunday was anything but a day of rest for the New England Patriots, who spent the weekend-closer getting their ducks in a row before the free agency transition period begins this week. The team traded Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars and reportedly re-upped with coveted offense talent Kendrick Bourne.

One of the Patriots' prized potential departures, however, has no apparent contract, as Christopher Price of the Boston Globe reports that Josh Uche is going without as the transaction log prepares to be packed.

Uche, 25, has spent the past four seasons in Foxborough since arriving as a second-round pick out of Michigan in 2020. Primarily used as a pass rusher alongside standout Matt Judon, he notably tallied 11.5 sacks during the 2022 season and has amassed 40 pressures over the last two campaigns.

Prior to last season's finale, Uche seemed confident in the Patriots' desires to bring him back, but mentioned that he had those conversations with head coach/Bill Belichick before his ousting.

"Free agency, I really don't know what to expect. This is my first time going through it. Whoever wants me, wants me, and I want to go where I'm wanted," Uche said, per Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site. "I feel like the team plays everything close to the vest. From my conversation with Coach [Belichick], that's what it's looking like (I'll be retained)."

"But, again, words are words. At the end of the day, it comes down to actions."

If it comes to actions, the Patriots appear to be currently lacking in that department. But if they're going to leave it to the last minute or beyond, the Patriots should probably act quickly.

At a young age and carrying some decent upside in the pass-rushing department, Uche will likely have his share of suitors. Time will tell if the Patriots are among them.
