49ers’ Executive Speaks On Brock Purdy’s Contract Status
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is preparing to enter his third NFL season, meaning that he will be eligible for a contract extension next offseason.

While that is still fairly far off, the 49ers are already thinking about it.

San Francisco CEO Jed York spoke about Purdy’s contract status this week and understands that the team will have to pay big in order to keep Purdy long term.

“It’s a good problem when your quarterback is one of the highest-paid guys on your team and in the league,” via Cam Inman of The Mercury News.

With the going rate for quarterbacks in today’s market, Purdy is certainly due for a huge pay day.

“It’s what the market is,” York continued. “Brock is going to ask for something that no one has ever asked for before. I don’t know how many players are making over $40 million (annually) as a quarterback right now.”

Actually, there are 12 of them, and four of them even make $50 million. Cincinnati Bengals signal-caller Joe Burrow leads the way at $55 million per year.

But York isn’t afraid to pay top dollar for a signal-caller, citing February 2018 when the Niners signed Jimmy Garoppolo to a five-year, $137.5 million extension.

“When we signed Jimmy several years ago, it was the largest deal in the history of the NFL, for three minutes,” York said. “But Jimmy was at ($27.5 million). That’s what the market is, and you have to accept the reality of the world. To me, the quarterback is the most important position not just in football, but all of sports, and those guys should be paid a lot of money.”

Purdy is coming off of a terrific 2023 campaign in which he threw for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 69.4 percent of his passes and posting a league-high passer rating of 113. He made the Pro Bowl and finished fourth in MVP voting as a result.

Most importantly, Purdy took the 49ers to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s looking like Brock Purdy will be under center in the Bay for a long, long time.
