The Red Sox have hung tough with David Ortiz. Now with days to go, the eyeball blinking has yet to commence. Reports filter out that the Sox will hold Ortiz to a one-year contract.
This should be enough to drive Ortiz apoplectic and to taking his talents to South Beach. Alas, there is no baseball team at South Beach dumb enough to give the old-timer a multiple year contract.
Can it be the Red Sox really are waking up? Can it be the sleeping giant no longer wants his pocket to be picked?
For years Ortiz could count on the blind, deaf, and particularly dumb support of fans. That ship may have sailed this season with Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett among the crewmembers looking for a lifeboat.
Saturday night commences daylight savings time and the Red Sox are likely to fall back too on Ortiz, offering him a paltry one-year $15million deal.
Insulted and sulky, Ortiz will split for the greener pastures of free agency. Alas, the money is not going to be greener anywhere else.
Perhaps the Red Sox will swap DHs with the New York Yankees who would take Ortiz with the stipulation that the Sox take A-Rod.
This would hardly make up for the Curse of the Bambino, but there could be some pleasure in seeing Ruth’s home run record toppled by a former Yankee now hitting for Boston.
